We were traveling the world, living on the beach in France with our little 3 year old Taimi. I was 5 months pregnant with my second girl. We were going in for a routine ultra sound. After 2 hours of measuring certain parts of the baby, our French doctor told us in his very broken English “brain maybe good maybe bad...(sigh) and she “is” Down syndrome. Would you like to schedule an abortion?” We were in shock! Because of the language barrier we couldn’t communicate or ask many questions.
Long story short, my husband willingly gave up his professional basketball career and moved his family state side so his wife and unborn daughter could get the best care possible. Fast forward 4 months 100 hours of doctors appointments and non-stress tests, our little Zuzu was born Feb. 4, 2013. The moment she was born, the very second she made her debut into the world, she unlocked a portion of our hearts we didn’t know existed. She alone expanded our capacity to love and understand in a matter of seconds. She’s teaching us lessons daily only someone of her caliber can teach.
Zuzu spent most of her first year of life in the nicu and in and out of doctor appointments. She’s undergone 2 open heart surgeries and 2 closed heart. She has a super rare heart valve that less than 20 kids in the world have. Thanks to this experimental heart valve, a move to New York and back, Zuzu is alive and thriving while changing lives by just her smile alone!
We didn’t know how good we would have it but with Zuzu in our life the joy and happiness we experience on a daily basis is unmeasurable.
